Houston’s large (and growing) South Asian population fuels what has become, especially in recent years, one of the best Indian restaurant scenes in the country.

If you’re a fan of the cuisine’s regionality and complexity, the Chronicle’s food team is recommending these 15 restaurants, some on the fine-dining side, others more casual.

Note: The Houston Chronicle pays full price for every meal consumed during restaurant visits.

Vegetarians beeline to this buffet located inside a Hare Krishna temple, but even if you’re a meat eater, Govinda’s is worth a visit for lunch or dinner. None of the dishes use garlic, onions or mushrooms but flavors still rock. Order up a bhindi masala with okra or a gluten-free friendly saag paneer with spinach swaddled in a creamy sauce. There’s also a free tour of the temple available before and after a meal here.
